Having bought the site with an unbuilt project, the client engaged us to design a new Spanish Mediterranean style home on the East Mesa, Santa Barbara. Maximizing same-level exterior access whilst preserving the neighbors’ views were among the many challenges we faced on the sloped site.

The result was a new 5,000 s.f. two-story house that achieved all of the client’s goals. The design showcased the prominent site conditions and captured coastal views out to the Channel Islands and the city’s harbor. The house includes a wide on-grade patio off the entire width of the upper floor, allowing direct access from the kitchen and other upper floor rooms. The open floor plan includes a great room opening to a coastal facing patio, and a simple foundation design minimized construction cost.
